A winter diet brings to mind clear broths with bread, aromatic stews and hot spicy curries. Using spices judiciously and thoughtfully will not only add a bang of flavor to your dishes, but also give your health a boost.
Here are some easily available spices to stock in your kitchen this winter:
Ginger - Used predominantly in Asian and Indian food, ginger soothes stomach aches, helps in digestion, and cures those niggling coughs and colds. As digestion becomes slower in winter, it is a good idea to fortify yourself with ginger in the form of ginger tea in the mornings and soups in the evenings.
Garlic - Used in cuisines all over the world, garlic is versatile and full of goodness. It is a good anti-inflammatory agent so attacks germs and boosts immunity. Garlic can be crushed, fried or sautéed and is used in everything from curries to rice dishes. Garlic also helps relieve colds and coughs.
Cinnamon - This spice has a bittersweet taste and is a favorite to use in cakes and curries. A dash of cinnamon powder can be added to your cup of coffee and in cupcakes and cakes. It is thought to boost the immune system, so it is an important spice, especially for the elderly as they are prone to more illnesses. It is also said to control blood sugar in diabetics.
Cardamom - A favorite in Indian sweets, cardamom comes in green and brown varieties can also be used in rice preparations for an amazing aroma.
Nutmeg - Popular in Italian cuisine and among pastry chefs, nutmeg too has health benefits. It relieves pains, helps in digestion and aids sleep. So sprinkle some into your special spaghetti or to your baked treats.
Cloves - Chewing a clove is said to stop a coughing fit. Cloves can be added to rice preparations and curries. It has a strong aroma, so use in small amounts.
Cumin - Cumin is great for soups, gravies and Indian dishes. Cumin aids digestion, improves immunity and is also used for treating respiratory disorders and insomnia.
Peppercorns -Whole peppercorns can be added to soups and stews while ground ones can be sprinkled over salads, meat or pasta dishes. Peppercorns have been used for centuries for treating common cold, coughs, indigestion, constipation and anemia.
Bay leaves - These leaves have a woody flavor and is used in curries, stews and rice preparations. They are usually dried and sold, and can be picked out from the dish before serving. Bay leaves are known for the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. These leaves can help alleviate digestive disorders such as constipation and acid reflux. Bay leaf oil can help in relieving general pain and aches.
Herbs - Thyme, rosemary and basil are popular in continental preparations while coriander, mint and tulsi are staples in the Indian household. Whatever you choose, there’s no doubting that herbs add an extra flavor and dimension to the dish. Herbs are packed with essential oils, anti-oxidants, vitamins and nutrients that help boost your body’s immunity levels.
